Changing Instructional Practice: The Impact of Technology Integration on Students, Parents, and School Personnel by Jennifer A. Alexiou-Ray, Elizabeth Wilson, Vivian H. Wright & Ann-Marie Peirano from Electronic Journal for the Integration of Technology in Education

In the article, “Changing Instructional Practice: The Impact of Technology Integration on Students, Parents, and School Personnel” one teacher wanted to explore the affects of technology as a result of people in the educational communities responding to such an integration negatively. Thus one of the authors, Jennifer A. Alexiou-Ray, researched and compiled data to show how students, parents, teachers and other school personnel responded to technology being introduced into their classrooms. The report itself is a good balance of both the positives and negatives on how technology may be utilized to help with the expansion of education. Alexiou-Ray also went out of her way to perform three research groups in which she was able to see how much a group of students were affected by technology and thus prove the point she was trying to make within the argument. What I found beneficiary was that at the end of her essay, she also included a survey in which one was able to grade how effectively technology plays in their life. The article is from the Electronic Journal for the Integration of Technology in Education, a journal that was created by the College of Education staff at Idaho State University. As well, the article is written by a multiple of authors, who are all professors at the University of Alabama. I personally enjoyed reading this article because again, it allows the reader to take on two stances but also that the author personally did her research and that we are able to get a multiple amount of responses in which even the positive and negative feedback has its limitations. I believe that his will be an interesting viewpoint to add to my paper because I want to be able to utilize a multiple amount of opinions and views and maintain those views with facts to help support my claim.

The Impact of Educational Technology on Student Achievement: What the Most Current Research Has to Say by John Schacter from Milken Family Foundation

In John Shacters report of “The Impact of Educational Technology on Student Achievement: what the Most Current Research Has to Say” the reader is able to get a positive and negative about the report and how students who are in different levels of school are affected by technology. In the article itself there is an intensive overview of the different arenas of technology that to include computer base instruction, “apple classrooms”, and how technology affects basic skills such as mathematics and English. The report itself collects a multiple amount of research and then lists both the positives and negatives in which technology has helped to improve those in the educational arena. The source itself comes from mff.org, or the Milken Family Foundation, an organization that believes in the advancement of education and science for others. The author, John Schacter is a senior research association at the foundation and has written many works in regards to the integration of technology and education. How this is beneficiary to my report is how it is able to list both positive and negative components to technology and exploring how the utilization of each is beneficiary to students. The report does not take on any biases and appears to be genuinely interested in allowing the reader come to their own decision about the position they want tot take on this new technological war, the same goal that I am aspiring to meet at then end of my own paper.

Teacher’s View on Technology and the Future of Teaching by Scott Reid in the International Electric Journal for Leadership in Learning

In his article, Teacher’s View on Technology and the Future of Teaching, Scott Reid explores the opinions of high school teachers in their views of technology being taught in the classroom, and how that looks for teachers in the future. What this article hopes to explore is the role that technology will play in the future of schools, whether that include different teaching methods, the introduction of on-lining schooling in primary and secondary schools, and the designs of classrooms. This article also took on a different approach in that it touched upon how both teachers and parents are influenced by the introduction of technology and also the loss of “traditional schooling” with a new take on virtual schools. The article was taken from the online journal “International Electric Journal of for Leadership in Learning”. The author is a Ph. D candidate who is doing his research in the integration technology and communication in classrooms. With this article, I hope to provide the teachers perspective on why some are un-interested in the integration of technology in their personal classrooms. What I found particularly interesting is how teachers introduced how parents would also be influenced by technology. However, this discussion is not only centered on how teachers would be affected by technology negatively. It also touches upon how technology may also benefit from technology and their perspective. This article is important because it is primarily focused on the teacher’s angle and how they benefit from technology.

Education and Technology Edited by Ann Kovalchick & Kara Dawson

The encyclopedia “Education and Technology” covers a detailed description of the new technologies and resources that are available to teachers and their co-workers, and how they may apply in classrooms. It is a detail description of what teachers might expect when dealing with students in the classroom, and different approaches, techniques, and resources that are available to these students that might help them prevail in their learning. The encyclopedia was collected by Ann Kovalchick, director of the Center for Innovations in Technology for Learning at Ohio University and Kara Dawson, an assistant professor of educational technology at the University of Florida. The source is also a positive example of how there are many different uses that can be utilized in the expansion of technology in classrooms. In particular, the encyclopedia covers topics from technology support to the implementation of computers in arenas such as math and technology. With this source I hope to gauge the many different ways in which technology may be used in different arsenals. While I would focus on those specifically targeted for the classrooms, I would also take advantage of the different learning styles that can be utilized with the help of technology.

Lateral Thinking and Technology Education by Shlomo Waks in the Journal of Science Education and Technology

In his article, Lateral Thinking and Technology Education Shlomo Waks discuss the different approaches of thinking in regards to education. These techniques include natural, mathematical, vertical and lateral thinking. With these four different types of thinking he hopes to merge how they can apply to children’s education in regards to utilizing computers (and other technologies) to use each different type of way of thinking. One of the particular ways in which technology already helps with the brain function is with lateral thinking, which he focuses on in his work. This works comes from the Journal of Science Education and Technology which focuses on the advancement of science education in the field of technology. His position in the essay is that the use of technology will help to improve education for children and to also trigger other methods that can expand the minds of young children and adults. This particular article is a good resource for it shows that technology in classroom can be utilized in a positive manner. Specifically, this article hones in one how scientifically the use of technology helps children to retain information but also to use that process and to help apply it to other arenas of their life, increasing the growth of their overall development of the brain. I plan to use this particular argument up in the essay to demonstrate that though their have been prior arguments that have suggested that technology now has led children to become lazy, that there are also benefits that can be scientifically proven.

International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) at iste.org

The International Society of Technology in Education is provided to a large audience who believe that the introduction of technology into classrooms is beneficiary to students of all ages (and most specifically those in K-12). What the group believes in can be noted in their mission statement: “ISTE advances excellence in learning and teaching through innovative and effective uses of technology” (istp.org). This particular group is also connected to the government and allowing the voices of members (usually teachers but also other supporters) to help them fight for the introduction of technology in classroom. The group has spanned over a course of thirty years and has other sub-group within its organization. The group also holds national conferences known as NECC for those members who are interested in expanding the word of each conference. I believe that this source would be beneficiary to my paper because it once again takes on the approach of wanting to improve technology in classrooms and goes through many different types of means to prove that. I know that there are a lot of different opinions and approaches that I can learn from this group and hear a different type of voice that advocates for technology in classrooms. In the overall scheme of things, I know this source would be good to retrieve personal testimonies and also different sources that could lead me into learning the topic more.

Technology in Schools Magazine

This magazine is dedicated to promoting different outlets of learning technology to students who are specifically in the K-8 grade range. The journal provides many positive articles which include but are not limited to: using multi-media in classrooms, the concept of “kids as teachers”, the challenges of introducing technology to schools, reaching out to inner-city schools, the ability to reach out to kids who are disabled, etc. What I found was positive in these articles is that though the magazine is aimed to reach out to teachers in utilizing technology in schools, it also notes that such a task will not be easy. One of the main arguments in this case is the work of funding in schools. What I appreciated about this magazine is, again, that two sided approach in the understanding of how technology is both a hindrance and a clutch for schools. In this case, the magazine takes on a financial approach which is one of the top arguments in why many schools and groups of people do not want to introduce technology into educational systems (and more specifically public schools). Also, this magazine starts to group this huge question into sub-groups that include reaching out to different audiences. The magazine specifically had articles that centered around women, children in inner-city schools, the disabled, and ELL (English Language Learning) students. By also noting that technology affects not only children but sub-divisions of children helps me note just how positive technology can be as a resource and thus help make paper to become stronger.

Making Way for Technology by Senta Raizen in the Journal of Science Education and Technology

In this essay, the author debates how beneficiary it is that technology is used as a fore-front in education and can benefit students in the school range of K-12. In the article the author notes that while technology is positive and will continue to help students grow and learn in their arenas of studies, that there are also challenges that technology has to face. The obstacle that Raizen addresses is that technology lacks both a) a history and b) tradition, both which are highly valued in our educational systems today. He then dives into defining what technology might be defined as today and also recognizes that there are many different approaches to technology and therefore the broad sense of the word helps encompass the many facets that technology has. This journal entry is applicable to my research because it takes on two important viewpoints in the technological debate; how technology benefits students and how it also does not fit into the learning curriculum. Because of the new age world that we are immersed into today, it has been a difficult search to find arguments that go against technology and the benefits that one may receive by utilizing it in classrooms. Raizen not only touches upon those benefits but notes that there is still a long way for it to be immersed in classrooms and that it is a field worth testing. He uses both arguments to his advantage by also pointing out that by testing these fields, people might be able to benefit from them. By having both of these strong points in his essay, I can lend a voice to not only how technology might be a handicap, but also how it can be used as a clutch in the arsenal.

In todays advanced world of technology, children from the ages of 8-18 have devoted most of there free time glued to eitehr their cellphone, TV, or ipod. As if being a teen weren’t enough, parents now have to fight with technology such as iTunes, Halo, and Jersey Shore. The result is that parents are having a hard time making a emotional connection with the children, and also fighting to make sure that they keep a balanced life between new age technology and daily interaction with actual humans. The problem is that these new technologies are not only means of entertainment, but are can also be used as an educational tool to prepare kids for life. Most children nowadays are able to produce homemade music videos or wallpapers all with the help of a computer and Adobe. While this type of technology are able to open doors for when they are ready to enter the competitive world, it is also hindering them on focusing on spending “quality” time with the family and building the necesssary skills to interacte with others around their age range or older.
